Life in the Cowboy State is unlike life anywhere else. We’ve got our traditions, our lifestyle, an etiquette that out-of-staters just don’t quite understand. If you’ve lived out here long enough, you’ll never get caught committing these Wyoming faux pas.
1. Stay inside on a nice day.
Most of the year in Wyoming is windy and cold, so when we do get nice weather, we get out and enjoy it. There's nothing like exploring the best wilderness areas in the country on a brisk September day.
2. Talk about buffalo
Tourists always ask us where they can find buffalo - and the answer we'll give will probably annoy them. There aren't any buffalo out here! Just bison.
3. Lock up.
Wyoming is a safe state. We don't lock our doors here... there's no need to. There's usually some room between us and our neighbors, and everyone out here is armed, anyway.
4. Complain about the wind anywhere else.
When we travel out of state, a blustery day just feels like home. While natives are complaining about their hats flying off, we can just laugh and remember that they have no idea what a windy day really is.
5. Skip the rodeo.
SKIP the Rodeo?! Not out here. We don't have major sports teams to root for, so we turn out in droves to support our favorite local riders.
6. Be a bad shot.
Being a bad shot is one way to bring shame on your family name out here. Hit your targets when you go out shooting, and bring home dinner if you go out hunting.
7. Travel with an empty trunk.
We know to keep some emergency supplies in our trunks - extra layers, jumper cables, flares and more. When you break down out in the middle of nowhere
8. Wear cowboy boots in town.
Tourists show up in Wyoming and buy Justin and Ariat boots all summer long. I guess they use them for their pinterest photo shoots back home, because none of those boots ever get to see a day of ranch work.
9. Visit Yellowstone in the summer
Our national parks are some of the most stunning places on the planet, but you can barely see them from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Skip the parks in the summer and check them out when they're at their best, in Fall.
10. Lament a snow day.
There are plenty of places where snow days are a major headache. They cause school cancellations, highway traffic jams, and major problems in cities throughout the country. Here, though, we take our days off and go snowmobiling.
