Despite their intense subject matter, U.S. military museums used to be cold, stuffy collections of medals and memorabilia, catering primarily to enthusiasts and scholars. But no more! Today, these museums don’t just display historical photos and curated artifacts. They are captivating and interactive experiences that document centuries of hard-fought battles using modern technology, virtual reality, life-sized dioramas, and actual military craft. But did you know that one of the country’s most impressive military museums – actually, the largest private collection of military vehicles in the world – is right here in Wyoming at the National Museum of Military Vehicles? The next time you’re in Dubois, Wyoming, be sure to stop by the NMMV to immerse yourself in larger-than-life American history.
The National Museum of Military Vehicles in Dubois, Wyoming opened in 2020 and houses nearly 500 restored military vehicles, artillery pieces, naval vessels, and more inside a beautifully designed space.
At over 160,000 square feet, there's an incredible amount of history displayed here that is fascinating for all ages!
From WWII bomber planes to amphibious frog crafts to helicopters, tanks, Humvees, and more, the private military vehicle collection of Dan and Cynthia Starks is considered to be the largest in the world.
In simple terms, the goal of the NMMV in Wyoming is "to honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families" and "to educate next generations on the history of American freedom." However, what's unique about this museum is the emphasis placed on the vehicles themselves and how they were used on the battlefield, in the trenches, and were often the coffins and stretchers that brought soldiers home.
These life-size exhibits showcase the sobering human and wartime atrocities of the past with reverence and respect, present the soldier experience, and thoughtfully guide visitors through a timeline of American military technologies and tactics.
The halls of vehicles seem to go on for miles, but every step offers something new to see, learn, and capture. All ages will find something to enjoy here.
Displays cover events from approximately WWI to the 21st century's Global War on Terror.
In addition to military vehicles, phenomenal exhibits of historic weaponry and ballistics can be explored, many of which are authentic pieces that played integral roles on the battlefield. In fact, the musket that fired the first shot at Bunker Hill has a prominent home here.
Knowledgeable docents and guides provide depth, insight, and a touch of humanity to the often chilling events that took place. Plus, unique, interactive exhibits provide glimpses into unseen stories of the warfront - from the dark jungles of Vietnam to sleeping rings in modern Iraq.
Historic photo collections and other memorabilia are sobering reminders that the history displayed here in dioramas and interactive exhibits is all very real and had very human impacts.
