If you live anywhere in Wyoming, you can count yourself blessed. Even in the larger cities, you don’t have to put up with the crowds and big-city attitudes you’ll find elsewhere around the country. Plus, there’s all that gorgeous Wyoming wilderness just outside your back door.
Teton County is the ideal example of everything that’s great about living in the Cowboy State. Folks are friendly, it’s beautiful, and it has immediate access to some of the most popular attractions in the state. That’s probably why it was on the short list of the best counties in the country .
You could do a whole lot worse than living in a spectacular place like Teton County, Wyoming.
It covers about 4,216 square miles in the northwestern corner of the state.
Jackson is technically the only town in the county and, therefore, is the county seat by default. It's a small town, though, and the over 18,250 county residents are spread out, living in census-designated areas and unincorporated communities throughout the district.
Some of those unofficial towns include Alta, Hoback, Kelley, Teton Village, Wilson, Moran, Moose, and South Park.
As is readily apparent on the map, there's a lotta wilderness in Teton County, and it's all beautiful. There's Yellowstone National Park and all of the stunning natural attractions it offers...
...Grand Teton National Park and it's equally magnificent scenery and opportunities for outdoor activities...
...and the breathtaking Bridger Teton National Forest.
Naturally, with so much unspoiled country all around, residents share Teton County with a diverse population of wildlife. You don't even have to go far from home to spot bison, pronghorn deer, moose...
...bighorn sheep, coyotes, and elk.
There are also predatory animals such as cougars, wolves, grizzlies, and other bears in Teton County. They tend to keep to themselves, but most Wyomingites know the importance of carrying bear mace on hikes through the wilds.
The wildlife population definitely outnumbers the humans in Teton County, but you'll find the human neighbors friendly and willing to lend a hand when you need it.
Teton County doesn't have a monopoly on being friendly and neighborly. It's actually a trait you'll find pretty much throughout the whole state.
While all of that is plenty of reason to name Teton County as one of the best in the country, there's also hard data to add to the aesthetic benefits. For starters, people living in Teton County are well-educated. More than 53 percent of the adult population has a bachelor's degree.
That's close to double the national average of 30.3 percent!
Plus, Teton County residents live a long life. The life expectancy is over 83 years, which beats out the average life expectancy across the nation of 79 years.
Who's to say whether it's the clean air, the scenic wide-open spaces, or living at an unhurried pace in close proximity to nature that can account for the long-life factor? One thing's for sure - it's all a part of the reason Teton County is one of the best counties in the country to live in.
