If you typically shun food from a gas station, you might not want to be so quick to bypass all of the ones in Wyoming, especially if you love barbecue.
That’s because there’s a filling station in Evansville that’s not what it seems. Rather than filling up your car with petrol and topping off the oil, you can fill yourself up with brisket, ribs, wings, and smoked sausage. It may look like a gas station from the outside, but this little place is actually a restaurant that happens to serve the best barbecue in Wyoming.
If you're traveling through Evansville, Wyoming, keep an eye out for the service station at 70 South Curtis Street, right beside the I-25 on-ramp. Not to buy gas or new wiper blades, but to experience the best barbecue you'll ever taste.
HQ Southern BBQ is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 8 p.m.
As the name suggests, they specialize in finger-licking Southern barbecue, but you wouldn't know it from the outward appearance.
After all, the building still looks a lot like what it was constructed to be: a garage and filling station.
But back in 2011, Doug Nicol saw the empty building as the perfect place to open a restaurant...
...and after a few months of hard work, HQ BBQ opened its doors, releasing the heavenly aroma of smoked barbecue.
Being a home-grown business, HQ BBQ proudly supports other Wyoming businesses, and their full-service bar stocks labels from Backwards Distilling Company...
...and Wyoming Whiskey.
Of course, you can also order sodas, freshly brewed iced tea, or the juice of the day, squeezed fresh every day in-house.
The drinks mostly serve as thirst quenchers, something to wash down the fantastic food served at HQ. For starters, you can order from an array of salads or try one of their signature appetizers like the HQ Smoked Wings...
...or the Papitos, a mouth-watering result of nachos meeting cheese fries.
The barbecue is the star of the show, though, and you'll find plenty of it on the menu starting with the smoked barbecue brisket or the ribs, which you can order wet with a choice of sauces...
...or dry, seasoned with the house Memphis-style dry rub.
HQ also does a mean smoked prime rib, on special every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
They even smoke up a delicious andouille sausage at HQ, which you can order with smoked peppers and onions...
...or on a bun smothered in their special house brisket and black bean chili and topped with cheese.
If you're not into chili dogs, no problem! The chili is on the sides menu along with baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, regular and sweet potato fries, onion rings, macaroni and cheese, and a variety of different veggies.
