Wyoming is one of the best places on earth, and each corner of the state is home to some unique destinations. If you’re traveling and looking for the best place to stay in Laramie, take a detour into Medicine Bow – Routt National Forest and enjoy a stay in a fire lookout tower cabin.
Medicine Bow - Routt National Forest spans across southeastern Wyoming and northeastern Colorado, and it's a wild, preserved land full of natural wonder.
With thousands of miles of trails, several campgrounds, 12,000 foot peaks, and a variety of wildlife, this National Forest is a nature lover's dream come true.
While there are many campgrounds in the forest, not many know you can actually reserve the retired Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout Tower cabin!
If you're not afraid of heights, you'll want to book this room ASAP. Sleeping high above the forest floor is something not everyone gets to experience in their lives!
The cabin is mostly equipped with everything you'll need for a comfortable stay, but you'll want to bring some necessities. Two single beds and mattresses accommodate two guests, but you'll want to bring a sleeping bag or sheets. In the kitchen, you'll find a table and chairs, cookware, dishes, utensils, a propane heater, stove, oven, and lights. Firewood is provided. There is no water or electricity at the site, so please bring plenty of water for cooking, drinking, and washing. Flashlights and lanterns are useful, as well as towels, dish soap, matches, toilet paper, and garbage bags. All trash and food must be packed out, and you'll want to leave the fire lookout cabin clean for the next guest.
From the top of the cabin, you'll be treated to the most incredible views in Wyoming.
At 10,003 feet above the earth, there's nothing like sleeping way up in the Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout Tower.
For information on reserving the fire lookout cabin, visit the USFS website, here. Each overnight stay costs just $40, and the cabin is typically open from June through September.
