Devils Tower National Monument was the country’s very first site designated as such, and it’s easy to see why the National Park Service found this odd geologic feature worthy of preservation and honor. To get the best views, hike the trail around its base on an unforgettable quick trek.
Devils Tower, or Bears Lodge, is a nearly 900 foot monolith that's likely a prehistoric volcano core.
The igneous rock that makes up the unique formation gives plenty of clues to its past.
A lot of adventurous rock climbers head here to summit the tower, but for the rest of us, the paved Tower Trail loop provides an immersive experience in history and geology.
While the up-close views of the tower and its interesting formations and faces is the main attraction here, the views across the Belle Fouche River valley are hard to beat, too.
You'll meander close to the tower and then farther away as you walk along the paved path. There's plenty of opportunities for scrambling up to the base, too.
Nothing is better than a trail where you can learn and hike, right? This Tower Trail has plenty of signs and posts scattered throughout the walk, where you can learn all about the history of the area.
The Tower Trail is just under two miles long, so you can enjoy this hike at a leisurely pace and still have plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the monument park.
