Unless you are heading to Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Park, you’d probably never venture through this fascinating little town that provides a gateway to both national parks. Everyone is always so focused on reaching the parks, the bigger prize, that the places along the way hardly get noticed. That’s the way it is with this overlooked town in Wyoming.
Dubois is located in northwestern Wyoming in Fremont County and has a population of around 1,000 residents. In the "Valley of the Warm Winds" the climate remains fairly moderate. Not only is the valley warm but the people are warm and friendly as well.
This overlooked town in Wind River Country is home to America's largest wintering herd of bighorn sheep. Ironically, the first occupants of the area around Dubois were members of the Sheepeaters who belonged to a group of mountain Shoshone.

Pictured is the main street in Dubois. Welty's General Store dates all the way back to the late 1800s. Not only was it a general store but it also served as a post office and doctor's office. Butch Cassidy was a frequent customer at Welty's General Store. Today, the historic store is still in operation.

The Cowboy Cafe is a must-stop for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Here, you can enjoy great buffalo burgers, sandwiches and homemade desserts. It's a quaint little restaurant with western roots that serves local favorites.
Unfortunately, in 2014, several businesses burned to the ground in downtown Dubois. The fire was accidental and appeared to have started in the attic above a wood store located in the rear of the store. Half a block of buildings was destroyed by this fire.

South of Dubois, you'll find Wind River exposure of millions of years of geology. In this picture you will see a beautiful combination of red sandstone and grey mudstone.
Dubois is a beautiful little town where you can simply sit back and enjoy nature and the simple things in life.
