People come from all over the world to ski in the Cowboy State, but they typically go to the well-known resorts like Jackson Hole and Grand Targhee. Those are terrific places, but they’re not necessarily where Wyoming skis.
When we want to hit the slopes, we do it at an out-of-the-way hill in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. Pristine and stunningly beautiful, it’s an exhilarating spot for everyone from beginners to experts to enjoy a day skiing. This ski area is pretty low-key, too, just the type of place you thought didn’t exist anymore.
The Snowy Range Ski Area is less than an hour's drive from Laramie.
Located in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, it's been referred to as the very definition of simplicity. Snowy Range is an area, not a resort. That means no ski-out/ski-in lodging, no valet parking, no fancy high-speed trams or lifts - just your basic good old ski hill.
...and, yes, there's a lodge, too. It's just for day visits, though, a comfortable and inviting place to warm up and grab something to eat or drink between runs or after you're done skiing.
One of the things Wyomingites love about Snowy Range is its low profile. With most people heading to the resorts to ski, the powder here is plentiful and lasts longer between snow showers.
Plus, Snowy Range offers more than just snack bar options when hunger hits. The Happy Jack Café serves up soups, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, and more, plus you can enjoy dinner and a drink at the Libby Creek Bar and Restaurant at the end of the day. With their own brewery on site, it's almost worth the trip up the hill for their small-batch craft beer alone.
