It’s hard to leave Wyoming. Our state is truly unlike anywhere else in the country in so many ways. People are few and far between, wildlife is everywhere, and wilderness is abundant. Sometimes, though, life has a different plan for a born-and-raised Wyomingite, and you may one day find yourself traveling far from home. Whether your move is temporary or long-term, soon you’ll realize that one thing you truly miss about the Cowboy State are these iconic Wyoming foods.
Bison, elk, beef, and game jerky are popular in Wyoming. While the rest of the country has to deal with the vacuum sealed and "mechanically separated" meats in store-bought jerky, we're lucky enough to have fresh jerky available nearly any time we want it. Roadside stands and local smokehouses blow pre-packaged jerky out of the water.
Elk is lower in fat and higher in protein than beef... but really, we love it because it's tasty. Elk burgers are some of the juiciest you'll ever have, and Wyomingites are lucky that elk is easy to find out here.
Wyoming's lakes and rivers are famous worldwide for their high quality trout. Catch a few and grill them up for a meal that can't get any fresher. When you move far away and have to deal with the store bought stuff, you'll really miss home.
Fry bread is a Native American tradition, and many Wyomingites have been lucky enough to try the real thing. It's delicious on its own or with a bit of honey, but turn it into "navajo tacos" for a filling meal.
You can find Chicken Fried Steak in plenty of diners across the country, but nothing beats fresh Wyoming beef and our homestyle way of seasoning the fry. Pair a great steak with homemade gravy and it'll sure taste like you've traveled back in time to dinner at grandma's.
While many people think of the Irish when it comes to soda bread, Native Americans have been making this stuff for centuries. In Wyoming, there are a handful of places where you can find soda bread in restaurants, like at the Cavalryman Steakhouse in Laramie.
Chokecherry jam can be hard to find in Wyoming - let alone if you try looking for it elsewhere! This mountain fruit makes perfect preserves that are tasty on top of fresh, flaky biscuits.
Wyoming is the nation's leader in bean production, so it's no surprise we use a whole lot of them, too. With our winter lasting most of the year in many parts of the state, a warm, hearty chili is something we've grown to truly love. When you move out of state, it just doesn't have the same "homey" feel.
What’s your favorite Wyoming dish? If you’re looking for great soda bread and steak options, the iconic Cavalryman Steakhouse is the best place to visit! It’s in the heart of the state – Laramie – and so worth the drive. Read more about The Timeless Wyoming Restaurant That Everyone Needs To Visit At Least Once here.
