1. Never leaving enough time for traffic jams
We really don’t have traffic, and we tend to make up speed limits as we go, so when Wyomingites move to cities and states with traffic jams and cops on every corner, we tend to run late for everything.
2. Craving fresh trout
You know, the kind you can’t buy… the kind you’ve got to go catch yourself. Get to tying those flies.
3. Leaving the car on
This one catches some eyes outside of the Cowboy State, but we aren’t about to let the car get cold if we just have to run in for something quick.
4. Bundling up
We bring at least five layers of clothing on every outing, and sometimes that’s not even enough.
5. Keeping half of your wardrobe in your car
This goes back to that dressing in layers thing. It could be 80 degrees at noon and 30 degrees at 8 p.m., so we need to have all of the appropriate clothing for every season we might encounter in a single Wyoming day.
6. Complaining about Yellowstone
We’ll happily whine about the crowds and the tourists in Yellowstone…even if we haven’t been there since we were little kids.
7. Scanning the sides of the road for antelope, moose, elk, and mule deer
They always pop out when you least expect it.
8. Checking the weather before you leave for any amount of driving
This is important in the winter, which runs from August to July in Wyoming. You should know if you’re going to need snow chains or a tank top wherever you’re going.
9. Leaving the doors unlocked
This one causes issues when you move out of state and constantly forget to take your keys with you. Half of the people I know in Wyoming couldn’t find their house keys in less than an hour.
10. Being a clean-freak at the campsite
Yes, I’m going to rinse everything about a mile from the tent. Yes, it might be overkill…but honestly, with the bears we have out here, I’m not taking any chances.
11. Talking about the “good old days”
For whatever reason, Wyomingites love to chat with their neighbors and friends about the past with a nostalgic rose-colored lens. While everything wasn’t exactly better way back when, it felt like a simpler time when we grew up way out here.
