Wyoming is known for its remarkable topography, but most visitors pay attention to our national forests and parks. There are plenty of Wyomginites who have yet to explore the Flaming Gorge on the Wyoming-Utah border, despite this being perhaps the most unique place in the West. The breathtaking Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is sure to impress any nature lover that stumbles upon this otherworldly wonder.
The Flaming Gorge is a river, canyon, and reservoir located on the Wyoming-Utah border, and it's open to the public via the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.
The massive reservoir stores more than 3.7 million acre feet of water on average, making it the largest in Wyoming and one of the largest in the Rocky Mountains.
All around the canyon, visitors can head out on a variety of adventures. Hiking, backpacking, and windsurfing are popular in the summer. Over the winter, snowmobiles take to the trails and cross country skiers test their skills.
The Flaming Gorge and Green River are popular boating destinations, too. The scenery here looks like something from another world, and when you get deep into the canyon, it almost feels like you've found Mars.
You can enjoy a scenic drive around the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area if you travel south of Green River. Taking the trek is a great way to see the massive cliffs and gorges that make this such a unique place.
You can access the Flaming Gorge Reservoir from Wyoming or Utah, and there are plenty of places to camp along the canyon that straddles both states. Read more about the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area right here!
