Miners and Stockmans Was The First Steakhouse In Wyoming

Way out in Platte County, you’ll find a tiny little town that’s in the middle of nowhere. Wyoming’s very first settled town is also home to Wyoming’s very first steakhouse, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. For as long as there have been Cowboys in Wyoming, there have been steakhouses. Hartville is Wyoming's oldest incorporated town. It was established in the 1870s, when prospectors settled in to mine the land.

Today, the town is home to under 100 residents, and it's one of the smallest in the state! It truly is in the middle of nowhere, and most of the town doesn't have cell phone service.

Despite being a tiny spot in the middle of nowhere, thousands of people visit Hartville every year to dine at Wyoming's oldest steakhouse, which has been around for longer than Wyoming has been a state!

Right behind the restaurant is Wyoming's oldest jailhouse. This tiny cellblock once held rustlers and wranglers when they were found by the law.

This classic cowboy outpost has been serving up food since 1862 - almost 30 years before Wyoming officially joined the union.

The interior is rustic - featuring local ranch brands, buck heads, and other glimpses into Wyoming's wild history.

Every cut here is hand trimmed, just like it was a hundred years ago.

Miners and Stockman’s is located at 608 Main St., Hartville, WY 82215. Don’t rely on your phone to get you there – you’ll lose signal before you get into town. Luckily, Main Street in Hartville is tiny enough that it’s pretty hard to get lost here. This delicious restaurant is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. On a nice night, expect a wait – but enjoy the fresh mountain air and an excuse to be disconnected from the world while you wait.
