When you think of Wyoming, images of the wild, wild west may come to mind. Sure, we’ve got all sorts of modern technology, but this is still probably the state with the fewest cell phones per capita 😉
When you’re looking to escape the touristy, urban side of Wyoming and see what it was truly like back in the day, there’s one town that will show off the best of our state’s heritage, history and beautiful western culture. Of course, I’m talking about Buffalo!
Buffalo is a small town at the base of the Bighorn Mountains with a population of just 4,500 people.
Okay, in Wyoming that almost makes it a big town... but the close-knit community and Main Street charm give it an old one-horse-town feel.
In fact, Buffalo's iconic shops and stores are so "Wyoming" that the Busy Bee Cafe was chosen to represent small town WY in the Netflix series Longmire!
The famous (and famously haunted!) Occidental Hotel and Saloon is a great place to stay the night or grab a drink. The bar's ceiling still has bullet holes from Wild West shootouts, so be sure to look up.
Named after the book series and TV show, this celebration of history and heritage has continued even though the show is gone. This year, catch the Longmire Days in Buffalo from August 10-12, 2018!
There's nothing quite like spending a a few days in Buffalo - it'll really help you feel your Wyoming roots!
If you’re looking forward to visiting the most Wyoming town ever, you might want to read up on the town’s most famous hotel. The Occidental Hotel (and the attached Virginian Restaurant) is one of the most iconic buildings in the State. Before you make your reservation, though, keep in mind you might not be sleeping alone! The Occidental Hotel is one of the most haunted places in Wyoming – read more about it here.
