One of the most fascinating wonders of the world is right in the Wyoming Mountains. If you’ve never heard of the Bighorn Medicine Wheel, read below for a fascinating story about a mysterious stone monument that was built hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago.
The Medicine Wheel is located in Bighorn National Forest, and you'll hike a short, 1.5 mile uphill path to get there.
Along the way, you'll catch stunning views of the Bighorn Mountains.
As you get near the top, you may feel a difference in the air - many people experience this as they get closer to the sacred ground.
At the top of Medicine Mountain lies the Medicine Wheel.
Here, 10,000 feet above the earth, you'll see a magnificent stone wheel that was built by Native Americans back when this land was their land. While the exact age of the Medicine Wheel is unknown, it's estimated to be at least 300 years, and potenitally 3,000 years old. No individual indgenous tribe has claimed it as their own, and it is an active sacred site for more than 80 native tribes.
To this day, Native Americans make a pilgrimage to this site for a ceremony, or to leave a prayer offering.
Visitors should not touch the prayer offerings placed on the fence. If you happen to visit during a ceremony, stay back from the participants, quietly observe, and refrain from taking pictures. If a ceremony is taking place during your visit, please stay back from the participants and observe quietly.
While the exact construction date of the Bighorn Medicine Wheel is unknown, archaeologists have discovered that its stone paths align with the stars and sun in fascinating ways.
From each stone spoke, one can note the alignment of stars during the summer solstice, or longest day of the year. The Medicine Wheel was constructed for the Solstice along with the religious and ceremonial purposes it holds today.
This incredible piece of history is right here in Wyoming, and is considered one of the most sacred sites in the world.
