Rural Wyoming is full of ghost towns that crumbled and disappeared when their mining industries dried up, and you’ll find one of the most overlooked way off the beaten path in Sweetwater County. Make a trip to see what remains of Winton and you’ll be fascinated by this abandoned town in Wyoming.
Sweetwater County and the Green River area of Wyoming was one of the most important coal-mining districts in the West. One town, Winton, became a hotspot. When the industry moved along, though, Winton was abandoned.
The town was originally called Megeath, after the Megeath Coal Company. When Union Pacific bought out Megeath, the name was changed to Winton. It was a thriving town until the mines closed in the 1950s.
If you make the trek to see this abandoned town in Wyoming, you'll discover that what was once a thriving mining community is now reduced to rural ruins.
All over the place, amateur graffiti artists have practiced their skills on these historic, one-of-a-kind structures. It's a shame that these crumbling ruins have been defaced.
