Wisconsin has some of the best hiking trails in the Midwest and some are simply remarkable. In Western Wisconsin, the Sand Cave Trail treats adventurous hikers to two caves, plus a view of a small and delicate waterfall. You can experience all of this in a hike that won’t take all day – here’s where to find this trail and why you should put it on your hiking bucket list.

The Sand Cave Trail is located in Wyalusing State Park, one of Wisconsin’s oldest state parks. The park covers more than 2,500 acres along the Mississippi River and offers some of the most spectacular views in the state. While many people just take in the vista from the 500-foot bluff and leave, the hiking trails are well worth exploring.

The Sand Cave Trail is accessible year-round, although you’ll want to wear appropriate footwear in the winter or when the trail is wet or icy – it can become very slippery. Use caution!

The trail will take you to two caves that were created by washed out areas of limestone – Big Sand Cave and Little Sand Cave. They are not huge caves but they are open so you can step inside.

The scenery on the trail is gorgeous. It winds through dense forest and between the caves. At Black Thunder Point, there’s a nice view of the Wisconsin River. You’ll also see a little waterfall.
