This Wisconsin Winter Wonderland Has More Than 60 Miles of Snowy Trails To Explore

Navarino Wildlife Area contains 15,000 acres of property that has been protected and is just waiting for you to explore it. Located about 25 miles northwest of Green Bay, this Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources area has a nature center and is open year round. On site, there are dozens of miles of trails that are kept and groomed throughout the winter, making them perfect for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. If you’ve never tried any of those things, this is the perfect place to start. All winter long they host introduction classes that help you get out into nature and explore Wisconsin’s winter.
Navarino Wildlife Area is located in Southeast Shawano County and Northeast Waupaca County. Habitats on the wildlife area include: upland forests, lowland forests, sedge marshes, bogs, flowages, and restored prairie habitats. This area was once part of a glacial lake bed formed 12,000 years ago. As you explore you might find sandhill cranes, turkeys, all kinds of different birds and most of the fur bearing mammals found in Wisconsin.
The West Branch of the Shioc River and the Wolf River run through the property and help draw in migratory birds and all kinds of wildlife. Don't be surprised when your path has already been trampled by the paws of something as you explore fresh snow.
The nature center here is a great place to start and also offers tons of different opportunities for guided treks through the many acres here. There are trails and signs and they do a great job of keeping folks updated about what's ready to be explored and what is closed on their Facebook page, so make sure you check in there before you visit.
You can rent skis for $5 for children and $10 for adults or snow shoes for $2 per child and $4 per adult. There's an extensive calendar of activities here, so make sure you check in to take a class or join in a trek.
There are also a number of night-time, lantern-lit events on the schedule. Join in for a gorgeous and unique way to explore. There are bonfires and snacks and activities to make for a fabulous winter evening.
This truly is one of the most unspoiled, relaxed spots in the state. With 15,000 acres, it never feels busy and you don't feel crowded. It's a great spot for those just learning who don't want to feel awkward or like they're holding anyone back. You can find places to have the trail to yourself to learn and figure it out at your own pace.

The nature center is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
