Way, way, way up north on the shores of Lake Superior tucked into little Sikiwit Bay is Cornucopia, Wisconsin. With a full-time population of just around 100 people and more famous and bigger lake towns around it, Cornucopia often gets overlooked. But this quaint and charming small town on the Bayfield Peninsula is the perfect place to access the lake and the Apostle Islands, as well as Siskiwit and Lost Creek waterfalls.
In my opinion, the very best thing about Cornucopia is how no one here seems to take life too seriously.
In the summer, this is a laid back beach town and in the winter, it's nothing but locals who've stuck out the coldest and snowiest seasons Mother Nature has to offer. Folks in Cornucopia like being away from it all.
Home to what just might be Wisconsin's oldest general store, everything here in Corny, as they like to call it, is just a bit slower, a bit more relaxed in the best possible way.
You can imagine generations of folks that came to Cornucopia and even some that came and never left. It's got that charm and something extra that will pull you in and make you never want to leave.
You're never more than a few steps from the beach here and it's truly and outdoorsperson's paradise. Whether you're on the beach, in the water or hiking nearby, there's something for everyone to enjoy here.
Though the Lake Superior beach is truly what will draw you to come - and stay - in Cornucopia, I still have to mention the gorgeous waterfalls nearby. Lost Creek Falls literally seem to fall off a shelf of ancient rocks and the Siskiwit Falls flow in shallow sheets over worn rock like a slide falls. If you get sick of the Lake Superior beaches (ha!) you can always head inland a bit and relax on the sand here, instead.
Stunning sunsets, peaceful days on the beach, brilliant views and the feeling that you're a bit at the end of the world all add to the charm of Cornucopia.
But no matter the time of year, every beach picture from Cornucopia looks like the taker is the only person for miles. The skies are stunning, the surface crystal clear and I can't imagine wanting to spend time on any other beach in Wisconsin.
It's the perfect small town in Northern Wisconsin, with old-world charm and sensibilities, friendly people and the most beautiful scenery you can imagine.
