La Mexicana sits right on Main Street, steps from the river in West Bend, so it’s not exactly hidden, but locals have probably driven past it dozens of times without even noticing it’s there. The small little grocery is chock full of all kinds of ingredients, spices, and produce that you can’t normally find at traditional grocers — that alone is reason enough to stop by. But tucked into the back of this grocery store are just a handful of booths and stools pulled up to a small kitchen that serves some of the best Mexican food you’ve ever had the pleasure of eating.
This little building is easy to miss if you're not paying attention. It's a non-descript little spot that's home to an amazing hidden gem.
The menu here is vast and everything is cooked fresh, so don't expect to just pop in and out. Most days you'll find at least eight different meat options, from simple chicken to more traditional tongue or tripe.
The servings are giant and they match the flavor you'll get in the amazing food here. Tacos are simple and traditional, served up in fresh, house-made tortillas.
You won't be able to resist come back here over and over to try the different combinations of flavors and meats. The fillings are cooked long and slow, so they're incredibly flavorful and tender.
Though the tacos are amazing, there's plenty of other options on this menu. Maybe try some of the caldo to start while you're waiting for the rest of your meal to be prepared.
Despite the humble location, you'll find some of the most interesting, flavorful, authentic Mexican food coming out of the little cafe tucked into the back of this grocery store. It's a prime example of not judging a book by its cover.
