It should be no surprise that Port Washington, which sits on a natural harbor where Sauk Creek enters Lake Michigan, has some really good seafood. But you might be surprised to find this seafood in a small little lakefront spot that looks more like a clubhouse than anything else. Newport Shores has the look of a Northwoods supper club or local watering hole on the inside, but don’t let the lack of white tablecloths put you off. The seafood here covers the gamut from South African shrimp to Lake Superior Whitefish and so much more.
Please note, Newport Shores has permanently closed.
Newport Shores sits right on the water in Port Washington, but no one would fault you if you thought the building was a private home or even a boat club. It doesn't scream "world class seafood."
A check of their Facebook page shows cornhole league standings and their outdoor concert schedule, so if you didn't know any better, you might pass right on by.
But to do so would be to your own detriment, because the seafood here is amazing. You'll find haddock, tilapia, scallops, lake perch, whitefish, walleye, shrimp, lobster, crab, catfish and of course, a killer fish fry.
They have an amazing outdoor space that again might make you think you're in the wrong spot, but we promise the tiki bar is exactly where you want to be.
Start your meal with some of the best chowder this side of the Appalachian Mountains. It's thick, creamy, chock full of seafood and the serving is not skimpy.
Local smelt and lake perch should be enough to start your tastebuds and get your stomach rumbling, but you can also find something for pretty much every seafood craving.
Newport Shores is located at 407 E Jackson St., Port Washington, WI 53074. For more information about the restaurant or to see the menu, check out their webpage here. If you’re looking for up-to-date cornhole league standings or which bands are playing, check out the Facebook page here.
