Years and years ago, a single store might serve an entire community and that store would provide most anything the locals could need. It’s rare to find a store like that anywhere, but down in Beloit, Bushel and Peck’s Local Market comes close. These folks not only serve sandwiches and weekend breakfast, but they have their own farm which provides the produce, eggs, and meat they use in their preservation kitchen to create delicious food that you can take home with you. The restaurant is also home to numerous community nights, making this awesome local market the center of the community in a way we rarely see anymore.
This awesome little store is both incredibly progressive and modern as well as a throwback to the way things used to be. These folks are as farm-to-table as you can get — they own their own plot of land to provide produce, meat, eggs, and more for their own kitchen. It takes the foodie movement to a whole new level.
But they also run a market that serves as a central meeting place of the community. From trivia night and fundraisers to painting classes and fixed-price dinners, you'll find something to do here where you can meet locals and have a spectacular time.
You can stock up on so many locally made products in this lovely store, as well as fill your pantry and freezer with organic, locally-produced foods. Stop by the soup freezer for some of the most delicious and easy to heat up meals you could ever find.
The owners started by opening an organic farm and they sold their grass-fed lamb, chicken, and eggs at the Farmer's Market. They envisioned the market and it's become a central part of food-conscious life in Beloit.
They tell you not to grocery shop hungry, but you're going to want to plan to stay at Bushel and Peck's for a meal. Their sandwiches make use of all the parts of their farm.
Among all the wonderful things you'll find here, the bakery is probably the best. From elaborate cakes and tortes to quick breads using seasonal fruit, the bakery here is absolutely amazing and you will want to sneak a few bits of it into your cart before you check out.
What really takes Bushel and Peck's over the top is their preservation kitchen. In order to provide the best in produce year-round in a cold, snowy state, it's necessary to can.
At Bushel and Peck's, you'll find a wide variety of house-made and canned items to take home, from kimchi to hot sauce. This kitchen is something of a revolution and it just one of the great ways this place is new, unique and oh-so-necessary. They've thought of everything and provide all you need to eat fresh, organic and local all year round.
Bushel and Peck's is truly a one-of-a-kind spot. Stop in for some of the best meals you've ever had with hyper-local ingredients lovingly combined. Then plan to stock your freezer and your shelves with local products from here and around the state. Bushel and Peck's took the idea of the local market and updated it for a food-conscious, 21st-century audience while still holding on to the historic idea of a general store as the center of the community.
Bushel and Peck’s is located at 328 State St., Beloit, WI 53511. You can also find them at the Beloit Farmer’s Market and the Dane County Farmer’s Market in Madison.
