About 15 miles north of Madison and just a few miles north of Lake Mendota sits the town of Waunakee. This adorable town has a quaint Main Street and has come to be a bit of an artist’s haven just outside the state’s capitol. Surrounded by some of the most gorgeous parts of Wisconsin, it’s easy to see why folks would be inspired living here. There’s a lot to draw creatives to Waunakee and one of the best is right on your way into town. There you’ll find Mill House Quilts. This giant quilt store is in a 143-year-old mill building that provides more than 6,000 square feet for fabric, classes, thread, quilts and more.
This classic old mill was built in 1875 and it features gorgeous old beams used in a beam and post construction. The mill building used to be used for storing and shipping grain, corn, flour, feed, seeds, coal and feed mill.
Then in 1994, the building was fully restored and refurbished and a year later, Mill House Quilts was opened.
This store feels like it has miles and miles of fabric. It's a colorful rainbow of prints and solids, plaids and batiks all just waiting to be made into new projects.
If you can't find the blenders you need here, I'm not sure they even exist. There's just so much to see and love here you could spend all day choosing, mixing and matching. It's basically a fabric wonderland.
And they're constantly getting in new bolts to add to their supply. These folks don't rest on the same boring fabrics that never turn over. They're constantly updating and adding to their stash, which means so are you!
Of course, the fabric on bolts is just the start. You'll find fat quarters and jelly rolls and strips and really anything you could ever need, want or imagine in terms of quilting fabric.
And then there's the thread, notions, books, patterns and so much more. Everything you need (and don't need, but want) to stock up your sewing room is here. With so much space, they're really able to ensure you have everything here at your fingertips.
All that would make Mill House Quilts an amazing store, but honestly, the best part of this place is the massive amount of space they have for classes, open sewing and socializing. These folks are able to bring in guests, teach classes big and small and maintain a fabulous sewing community in Waunakee.
No matter what you want to sew, these folks have a class and experience. The employees are so friendly and helpful and you'll find yourself among friends here instantly.
From classes on making your own batik to kids classes making pants and learning to sew, there's pretty much nothing you can't do here. It's awesome how varied the offerings are here and how they're open for sewers of all ages and abilities.
Mill House Quilts is really a spectacularly huge quilt and fabric store. Everything you could ever want and need is stocked right here with some of the best staff you've ever encountered. You really cannot imagine a bigger, more welcoming and wonderful quilt shop.
Mill House Quilts is located at 100 Baker St., Waunakee, WI 53597. Learn more about this fabulous quilt shop on their website and check out their newest fabrics on their Facebook page.
