There’s a reason the Midwest has latched on to the idea that the Great Lakes provide a “Third Coast” for this United States. Certainly not our most well-known attraction, the beaches in Wisconsin are some of the best in the country, offering all the perks of being on the East or West coast with far lower property costs.
If you’re looking for a weekend away, a place to take the kids when school’s out or just a spot to take in the relaxation of being near the water on a long day, here are eight of the prettiest, cleanest, most beautiful beaches on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior that help you forget that Wisconsin is pretty far from anywhere tropical.
1. North Beach - Racine
Named to numerous best beach lists nationally, North Beach is 2,500 feet of gorgeous Lake Michigan shoreline and 50 acres of beach with live music, volleyball, concessions and more.
The lively beach life will transport you and the white sand beach may cause you to forget that you're basically in downtown Racine.
The atmosphere really helps lend credence to the idea of the Midwest being the Third Coast.
Located at 100 Kewaunee St, Racine, WI 53403.
2. Big Bay Beach - LaPointe
This 1.5 mile long beach on Lake Superior on Madeline Island feels like such an escape.
With gorgeous sand, lapping waves and tall sea grass, you'd be hard pressed to remember that not only are you not on the coast, but you're in far northern Wisconsin.
Located at 2402 Hagen Rd, La Pointe, WI 54850.
3. Schoolhouse Beach - Washington
Off the tip of Door County, this remote beach is so unique. Instead of sand, the beach is made of smooth limestone pebbles.
As the waves crash in and you feels the stone shift under your feet, you'll definitely forget that you're in little ol' Wisconsin.
The water is breathtaking, the pebbles unique and the view unparalleled.
It's hard to believe any beach so beautiful and so unique could be right here in Wisconsin.
Located at 1824 Washington Harbor Rd, Washington, WI 54246
4. Lions Den - Grafton
This hidden gem just north of Milwaukee doesn't have a ton of shoreline, but the Nature Preserve it sits on keeps the area pristine.
Despite being just a short trip from the city, you'll feel remote and far away from the Midwest when you venture here.
Located at 511 High Bluff Dr, Grafton, WI 53024.
5. Rock Island - Washington
It's unsurprising that our most beautiful and pristine beaches sit at some of the most remote parts of the state.
Accessible only by ferry, Rock Island has been able to preserve the beach here and offer a totally amazing beach experience.
Located at 1924 Indian Point Rd, Washington, WI 54246.
6. Whitefish Dunes - Sturgeon Bay
The biggest dunes this side of Lake Michigan are protected and preserved in this state park. They dunes effectively shield the beach and make this place feel even further away from civilization.
The dunes lend a particularly wild and untamed aspect to this beach and you'll feel like you found a gem in the Caribbean, not in Door County.
The sunrises can't be beat and help lend an even more tropical feel.
Located at 3275 Clarks Lake Rd, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235.
7. Kohler-Andrae - Sheboygan
The little sister version of Whitefish Dunes, Kohler-Andrae has more than two miles of beach, a boardwalk, dunes and beautiful water.
The sandy beach and beautiful sand in between your toes definitely make this beach feel a lot more tropical.
Located at 1020 Beach Park Ln, Sheboygan, WI 53081.
8. Point Beach - Two Rivers
With more than six miles of shoreline, you'll definitely be able to find a stretch of sand that's all your own.
The quaint local town, the craggy landscape and the white sand beach really give this place a Northeastern beachy vacation town sort of feel.
Located at 9400 County Rd O, Two Rivers, WI 54241.
