Though we mostly think of waterparks and summer vacation when it comes to the Wisconsin Dells, there are actually some rather amazing and fascinating canyons to explore. The Dells are named after the unique rock formations that abound along the Wisconsin River and Lake Delton. These canyons are billions of years old and their striated stone tells the story of all those ages of history. Lost Canyon is the longest and deepest land canyon in Wisconsin and it can be difficult to explore.
Lost Canyon has been visited by tourists on horseback for more than 50 years. The same family has owned this attraction since the late 1960s and offer a totally unique way to visit and explore the deep gulches along the Wisconsin River.
The tour takes you for a mile-long trek through this canyon. Two horses and a wagon, plus a tour guide, will take you through the stunning slot canyon.
This deep, dark canyon has been formed over millions of years. In some of the deeper parts, the sheer rock and sandstone wall have not felt the touch of the sun in more than 50,000 years.
The horses are well-versed in the path they take, but these slot canyons can be intimidating. In other nearby parts, you could reach out and touch both sides with your hands.
The canyons were carved out of the earth and go down incredibly deep. It's taken millions of years of erosion and water flow to cut these deep gorges into the rock.
The stone sits in layers and each of those layers tells a story of the history of the land and how different glaciers and ages affected it. There's so much history to see and learn.
The ride is a nice way to relax away from the loud waterpark crowds. It gets you a bit away from the madness of the Dells and puts you out in the stunning nature that surrounds you.
