Normally, “small town” and “world-class attraction” aren’t terms you’d put together. But there are exceptions to every rule, and in this case, that exception is the Dickeyville Grotto. The unique creation is crafted from a variety of materials from all around the world. An indescribable work of art, the Dickeyville Grotto is a must-see. Take a look:
As you probably guessed from the name, Dickeyville Grotto is located in Dickeyville, which is in Grant County.
The display surrounds Holy Ghost Parish, which makes sense when you learn that it was created by a former pastor of the church, Father Matthias Wernerus.
Father Wernerus spent five years, from 1925 -1930, working on the unique creation, a fact that's even more impressive when you consider the entire thing is handmade and was built without blueprints.
Nearly as unconventional as the site itself are the items used to make it. Colored glass, gems, and antique heirlooms are just a few of the materials used.
Visit the Dickeyville Grotto daily from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. for self-guided tours year-round. Guided tours are available 7 days a week June 1st – August 31st and on weekends only during the month of September. For more information, call (608) 568-3119. You can also visit the Dickeyville Grotto website.
