This is America’s Dairyland and the amount of farmland in this state far surpasses the amount of city space. Life in the country and on a farm is far different than life in the city and finding someone else who had the same experience growing up is like finding a kindred spirit. There are lots of ways to tell a farm kid from a city kid, but here are 14 signs you grew up on a Wisconsin farm:
1. The only time you went into the city was for State Fair.
I mean, you might have gone into town, but trips to Milwaukee were pretty much reserved for those 10 days in August.
2. Your senior pictures had at least one animal or piece of farm equipment in them.
Did you even graduate if your cowboy boots weren't prominently displayed?
3. You learned to drive before you started high school - most likely on a truck older than your parents.
You knew how to work a stick shift long before you were legally allowed to hit the road, and you probably started driving the tractor even earlier.
4. Your idea of a summer tan was very different from most people's.
There's no amount of sunscreen that can combat the number of hours you spent outside, and there wasn't enough time not working to ever balance out those tan lines.
5. Your closest neighbors were a minimum of two miles away.
Folks that talk about going outside to play with their neighbors? You have no idea what that's like, unless they count when you went to talk to the animals.
6. All Halloween meant was more work as you manned the family corn maze well into the night.
7. You've had people ask you if you ride cows to school and you're able to explain - in detail - why cow tipping is really not a thing.
We don't know which idiot first tried to make a joke of Wisconsin by talking about cow tipping, but they clearly don't know anything about cows. You know those stubborn and giant bovine aren't tipping anywhere.
8. Your parents' idea of after-school activities were 4H and FFA.
The only way you could convince your folks to give you time away from the fields was to sign up for one of these two groups. You might have resisted at first, but you also made some of your best friends as you spent the night in county fair barns.
9. You learned at an early age not to name and become attached to the animals.
You have to learn to separate those emotions and grow up pretty quickly, no matter how darn cute those animals were.
10. Your idea of cardio is hay jumping.
You perfected your balance and strengthened your muscles without the help of fancy equipment.
11. You're still waiting for high-speed internet and 4G cell reception.
There's a lot to love about the peace and quiet of the country, but would it be so difficult to include the pleasures of wifi in that charm?
12. You don't know what sleeping in is and you've definitely never gotten a snow day.
The crops and animals wait for nothing. You're used to getting more done before the first school bell than most people do all day. Even if school is cancelled, there's plenty on the farm to keep you busy all day long.
13. You're beyond immune to the smell of manure and it still makes you laugh whenever city folk turn up their noses.
The very best part of the aforementioned state fair is watching all the city kids stare in horror as the animals do their business and you clean it up. But you don't really even think twice about it anymore.
14. You wouldn't trade it for anything!
Even with all its foibles, you can't imagine any other way of having grown up.
