Just south of Madison in Stoughton, there’s a family-owned bakery that’s been serving the community for 80 years. Fosdal Home Bakery is an icon among Wisconsin bakeries. They’ve been named Bakery of the Year by the Wisconsin Bakers Association and their owner is enshrined in the Wisconsin Baking Hall of Fame. A charming mix of old school and modern, this place has been delighting locals with sweet treats across multiple generations. Recently named the “Sweetest Bakery in Wisconsin,” Fosdal’s is the kind of place it’s worth going a little out of the way for.
What makes Fosdal's so wonderful is that it has many of the hallmarks of a place that's been around for decades. You can feel the history. There are folks who meet up for coffee here every morning that have been doing so most of their life. There's nostalgia here.
But there are also plenty of fun, fresh, modern things to love. Fosdal's isn't stuck in the past, they just embrace their roots and their history. You'll find a fun "Flannel Friday" promotion in the cold months and a young crew of counter workers who are always smiling.
They're just a few doors down from the Livsreise — Norwegian Heritage Center, Fosdal's also embraces the area's Norwegian roots. You'll find all kinds of classic cookies like grandma used to make.
But you'll also find the delicious, fun, whimsical things that will keep your kids happy. These folks don't stick to just one type of baking and they've evolved as the years have gone on and that's what makes it a fabulous place.
In the mornings, you'll find plenty of folks enjoying a coffee, donut, and chat. Stop by and nab a donut to eat now and some to eat later. They're light and fluffy and oh-so-good.
There's just something so welcoming about Fosdal's, where you can find a cheap donut or cookie to satisfy a sweet tooth, but you can also get elaborate cakes, pastries, and delicacies you can't find anywhere else.
Fosdal's is frankly an iconic part of the Wisconsin landscape. It's so easy to look around and see restaurants, cafes, and bakeries that have come and gone. But Fosdal's has remained the gold standard for Wisconsin bakeries for 80 years.
Baking is a labor of love and you can taste all the passion, love and experience in every pastry, donut, and cake you get from Fosdal's. This place is truly special and we're lucky to have it here in Wisconsin.
