Mazomanie is one of the coolest small towns in the country. Midway between Madison and Spring Green, it’s an artsy little town that was built thanks to the railroad coming through to connect the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. Known to be a bit eccentric, it’s home to the state’s only nude beach and is kind of an artist’s community. And sat right in the middle is one of the coolest restaurants in the state – the Old Feed Mill.
There's a ton of history in this beautiful building that's been featured on Food Network and in Midwest Living Magazine. You'll fall in love with the rustic charm and that's before you even get to sample the stellar menu.
According to the village of Mazomanie website, "The Railroad chose Mazomanie as a service area for its operations and built a water tower, turntable, and maintenance buildings along the track east of Brodhead Street. Only the coal sheds survive. The railroad also created Lake Marion when it laid its tracks along Black Earth Creek south of the village. Water impounded by the lake was harnessed to power the Lynch and Walker Flouring Mill, which continued to use water power into the 1950s."
This building was once a major part of the town, with the railroad running right past. Mazonmanie's locale was appealing, just off the Wisconsin River and not far from Madison. Now, it's a nice spot that can easily be visited from many parts of the state for a unique and hearty meal.
Visiting the Old Feed Mill feels like a trip back in time and like you've been invited into your grandma's kitchen. Housemade bread, rib-sticking pot roast and hearty desserts are the hallmarks of a menu that feel homemade.
The walls here hold more than 100 years of stories and the owners have preserved much of what has made this building a part of the community for so long.
Once you've had one of the spectacularly delicious meals here, you'll want to come back again and again. "Savor the Old Feed Mill’s award-winning pot roast, taste our incredible cider roast chicken and indulge in our famous bread pudding."
