Wisconsin is actually chock full of great small towns that offer all kinds of amazing options no matter what you’re looking for. There are obvious popular spots like in Door County or the Dells, but out west there’s an often-overlooked, but totally awesome spot that’s secretly an amazing place for a little getaway.
Most folks only know Hudson as a spot you drive through just before you cross into Minneapolis.
If we've registered it at all, it's as a place to stop and fuel up before we head over the Mississippi. And being that close to the Twin Cities is a very nice benefit of being in Hudson, but those that don't stop to explore are totally missing out.
Hudson sits right on the St. Croix River, giving plentiful opportunities for outdoor fun and some of the most gorgeous vistas you've ever seen in Wisconsin.
There are boats you can book tickets on or you can head out on the water of your own accord. The leaves along the shore are gorgeous in fall, and in the summer the miles of riverfront provide the perfect place to relax and unwind.
The area is also home to Willow River State Park, which has 3,000 acres to explore in any season. Hike it in the warmer months or strap on cross-country skis in the winter. it's a stunning, underrated state park just waiting to be enjoyed.
In town, you'll find a charming, historic downtown with shopping, dining and more for you to explore.
Check out the 1855 Octagon House, the Phipps Center for the Arts and more gorgeous buildings with unique history to uncover some of the most special parts of Hudson.
The area along the Mississippi River has turned into a wonderful home for numerous wineries and you'll find a few spots to sip and unwind near Hudson. Check out Belle Vinez, Cracked Barrel and nearby 65 Vines for stellar wines you'll want to take home with you. If beer is more your style, check out Hop & Barrel Brewing.
One of the best reasons to stop in Hudson is Knoke's Chocolate and Nuts. This little boutique chocolate shop is world-renowned and award-winning. Even though they've been around less than 10 years, they've already expanded twice and have made themselves a staple of life in Hudson.
From the classic German fare of Winzer Stube to the hyper-local LOLO (locally owned, locally operated), you'll find some delicious and unexpected food in this charming small town.
Hudson is an amazing small Wisconsin town chock full of things to see, do and eat.
You won't regret adding this small spot on the St. Croix to your list of places to visit. A great time to put it on the calendar is for the largest hot air balloon festival in the midwest. The Hot Air Affair is February 1-3 this year and it's a glorious, colorful reason to head to Hudson and explore.
