There’s an interesting history in some area sweet shops that you may never have thought about. Caramel Crisp Corner in Oshkosh is a thriving and amazing place to stock up on some of the most amazing cookies you’ve ever encountered. But they didn’t always serve up sweet treats. Caramel Crisp started in 1933 as a popcorn shop.

It’s not that unusual of a story – Kehr’s Candies in Milwaukee started around the same time and they made potato chips. Both were inexpensive, low overhead items that could be sold during the depression. Many families were able to keep themselves afloat during tough times offering a bit of a treat for a small price. The profit per item was low, but it was enough.
