There’s an interesting history in some area sweet shops that you may never have thought about. Caramel Crisp Corner in Oshkosh is a thriving and amazing place to stock up on some of the most amazing cookies you’ve ever encountered. But they didn’t always serve up sweet treats. Caramel Crisp started in 1933 as a popcorn shop.
It’s not that unusual of a story – Kehr’s Candies in Milwaukee started around the same time and they made potato chips. Both were inexpensive, low overhead items that could be sold during the depression. Many families were able to keep themselves afloat during tough times offering a bit of a treat for a small price. The profit per item was low, but it was enough.
Despite its humble beginnings as a popcorn shop, Caramel Crisp Corner has flourished. Eighty-five years after it first opened, Caramel Crisp is still going strong. They still make some of the most delicious popcorn you've ever had and offer all kinds of toppings and coatings. But they've also expanded their repertoire to include cookies, cakes, ice cream and more. If you have a sweet tooth, this is where you want to be.
But these folks also learned a thing or two over the decades and the popcorn shop has grown and expanded. That little shop expanded and now includes a cafe with delicious breakfast food, deli-style salads and sandwiches, hot sandwiches, coffee drinks and smoothies as well as a candy & toy store, kids’ book store, ice cream shop, and gift shop. But what these folks do best is cookies.
In fact, you could call these the best cookies ever. They have a huge selection of cookies, with 20 to 30 flavors available at any one time. There are seasonal flavors that rotate in and out and they're constantly thinking up new and delicious flavors.
There's just nobody that makes cookies like these. Not only are they made with top quality ingredients with the same loving recipes from decades ago, but they're made in small batches all throughout the day. These aren't mass-produced cookies that spend time in the freezer - these are crafted goodies that come fresh out of the oven every couple of hours.
You simply won't be able to choose a favorite from all the many varieties Caramel Crisp Corner makes, though I'll admit a partiality to the fresh cookie and ice cream sandwiches. Perfect on a hot summer day or as a treat for your sweet tooth even in the cold, these are a unique, flavorful and delightful way to get your cookie - and sugar - fix.
Unsurprisingly, these folks shine at the holidays. From nostalgic cookies grandma used to make to old classics and interesting new flavors, you'll find a wide variety of holiday cookie options at Caramel Crisp Corner. But they don't stop at Christmas. Get a vast array of themed and flavored cookies for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Halloween and more!
The cookies here are soft and chewy, ooey-gooey and delicious. They're homemade perfection right out of the oven and available for you to nibble on or take home whenever you want. You won't be able to resist snacking on a few while you're here and then taking some home - though they may not survive the car ride.
Caramel Crisp Corner is an Oshkosh-area institution that started off serving up a simple treat and has evolved into one of the tastiest, dreamiest, most amazing shops in the Fox Valley. You never quite know what you'll find here, but you know it'll be unique and one-of-a-kind - and beyond delicious.
You don't just have to come here to satisfy your cravings - you can also come in for a cozy, filling lunch that is as comforting as you can imagine. It's like sitting in grandma's kitchen and getting rewarded for clearing your plate with a life-changing cookie. Caramel Crisp Cafe offers it all.
Caramel Crisp Corner is located at 200 City Center D, Oshkosh, WI 54901. You can learn more about this awesome bakery and cafe on their website or find more mouthwatering pictures on their Facebook page.
