While most Wisconsinites are familiar with Fort McCoy, many are unaware that this huge United States Army installation is a place for winter fun. On federal land just outside the secure area of the fort, there’s a ski hill called Whitetail Ridge that’s a perfect destination for snow lovers. It’s not the biggest hill in the state, but it offers full-sized thrills, including some snow tubing that’s hard to beat. Here’s what you need to know about snow tubing at Whitetail Ridge Ski Area, one of the best spots for winter fun in Wisconsin.
You’ll find Whitetail Ridge in Monroe County, on the west side of Fort McCoy. It’s an easy day trip from places like La Crosse, Eau Claire, and Madison.
Fort McCoy is a huge base that covers 60,000 acres. It’s been around for more than a century. Thousands of people live, work, and train on the base and Whitetail Ridge offers a spot for some winter recreation for service members, as well as the general public.
You won’t confuse this region with the Rocky Mountains, but that’s part of the charm – it's an awesome place for families and it’s a good place for new skiers to find their snow legs.
The resort has cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, and a big tubing hill. Skiers ascend the hill with the help of a t-bar; tubers ride a “magic carpet.”
When you arrive at the resort, you may hear a few screams in the distance. Head that way to find the tubing hill. It has a drop of 800 feet and it offers plenty of thrills. It’s sure to put a smile on your face!
Learn more about the Whitetail Ridge Ski area on the Fort McCoy website. There’s a lot to discover in Monroe County, even if you’re not a fan of winter in Wisconsin. For instance, this old library is a bookworm’s happy place.
