One of Wisconsin’s most iconic lighthouses is located on Cana Island and it’s an impressive sight. Most visitors make the trip on foot out to this little nearshore island, but to really appreciate the Cana Island lighthouse, consider getting a mariner’s view. A kayak adventure outfitter can make the experience happen. It’s an incredible Door County experience – here’s what you need to know about this Lake Michigan kayaking adventure.
Cana Island is part of the town of Bailey’s Harbor in Door County – it’s a short drive from the center of town, but if you don't have a kayak you have to walk the last stretch to the island, via a path that’s sometimes submerged by waves.
On the edge of the island, the Cana Island Lighthouse has stood proudly for a very long time. The navigational aid was built to replace the Baileys Harbor Lighthouse in 1869 and it was first lit in 1870.
It’s still used by boaters today, even though it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse is open for tours that are given by the Door County Maritime Museum.
Door County Adventures, a kayaking outfitter, operates popular excursions on Lake Michigan to destinations like sea caves and an estuary. An extended tour takes paddlers to Cana Island.
