Devil’s Lake State Park is not only one of the most beautiful and popular state parks in Wisconsin, it’s also is home to one of the rockiest places you’ll find in the state. Tumbled Rocks Trail takes hikers into this unusual landscape and offers a close-up look at boulder fields that have drawn visitors for more than a century. Lace up your hiking shoes – here’s waiting for you on Tumbled Rocks Trail.
The trail is located in the heart of Devil’s Lake State Park, a park that’s located in eastern Sauk County, in the heart of the Baraboo Range. It’s just south of the city of Baraboo and a scenic 40-minute drive from Madison.
The park covers more than 9,200 acres and includes 29 miles of hiking trails, including some that are a little challenging. Some hikers have compared the park, with its rugged trails and sweeping views of the 360-acre Devil’s Lake, to a “baby” Lake Tahoe.
Visitors have been coming here for a long time to experience the breathtaking scenery. It has been a state park since 1911 and private resorts flourished years earlier – the first hotel was built here in 1866.
The park is famous for its 500-foot-high quartzite bluffs that flank the sides of Devil’s Lake. They are strewn with gigantic boulders that spill down the bluff and into the water. The park’s bluffs are popular with adventurers. Rock climbers string ropes and climb some high technical sections while scuba divers explore boulders than have fallen into the lake. In between these worlds you’ll find the Tumbled Rocks Trail.
You won’t find any hiking like this elsewhere in Wisconsin. The Tumbled Rocks Trail takes hikers through boulder and talus fields at the base of the west bluff. It follows the edge of the lake and runs 2.4 miles.
Devil’s Lake State Park is open year-round. Camping is available and a vehicle park sticker is required for entrance – you can purchase them on site. Learn more about the park here. Once you’ve picked your way through the rocks of Devil’s Lake, here’s an incredible sea cave hike that you have to explore.
