Located just outside Sheboygan, tucked between Elkhart Lake and the Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit, Plymouth is a small Wisconsin town of about 8,000 folks that’s chock full of small-town charm and things to do. With wonderful restaurants, a ton of history, awesome outdoor spaces and of course, cheese, this is practically the perfect Wisconsin small town and you definitely want to plan a visit.
Plymouth was first settled back in 1845 and has been a center of dairy and cheese production pretty much ever since. Home to the Wisconsin Cheese Exchange at one point, Plymouth has been home to companies making cheese-related items. It earned the nickname "Hub City" in the mid-1800s when it was also home to wagon, hub and spoke production.
Mill Street through downtown Plymouth is as cute and quaint now as it was years ago. Many of the historic buildings are still intact and have been restored and repurposed.
Now Mill Street is not only home to numerous shops and businesses you'll want to check out, but it's also home to festivals, events and all kinds of fun.
Plymouth touts itself as "The Cheese Capital of the World" and a new Dairy Discovery Center helps tell that story. Wisconsin produces more than a quarter all cheese made in the US; if Wisconsin were a country, it would be the fourth largest cheese-producing country in the world. And tiny Plymouth is a huge player in that very large business. About 15% of all cheese from the US originates from or makes its way through Plymouth.
A local favorite attraction is Antoinette the fiberglass cow, who is located on the location of the Wisconsin Cheese Exchange.
There are tons of great places to eat and drink in Plymouth, but start yourself off with some local brews at Plymouth Brewing Company.
Or fill up on some of the best pizza in the state at Deo's Pizzeria.
For a more classic Wisconsin experience, take in PJ Campbell's at the Depot for a supper club experience and authentic German food. Their outdoor beer garden is a perfect spot in warm weather.
When you're looking to work off a few of those calories, head to one of the 17 city parks or nearby Kettle Moraine State Forest to explore some of the most gorgeous spots in the state.
The diverse ecosystem at nearby Sheboygan Marsh makes it a perfect place to explore and enjoy.
No matter what brings you to Plymouth, you'll find plenty to keep you occupied in this quaint, welcoming community that has everything from small-town gatherings to exciting events.
