Wisconsin is known for bratwurst and there are hundreds of places to get them. Everyone has their own favorite, many of which they just cook themselves. But Sheboygan is home of the brat. Or at least the American-style brat. It’s synonymous with this sausage that helps define Wisconsin and one of the very best places to get a brat in Sheboygan is the Charcoal Inn.
This place is as down-home, no-frills as you can imagine. For more than 40 years, they've been serving up chargrilled perfection in a tiny spot that looks a bit like a time warp. But don't let that fool you. You're still in for one of the best meals of your life.
Cozy and welcoming, with staff that treat you like you've been coming there as long as you've been alive, the Charcoal Inn is sort of perfectly Wisconsin. It's a slice of Midwestern nice that is an institution.
The reason folks keep coming back to this little spot is this grill. The chargrilled, smoky, flavorful food they put out is simple, with few extras - mostly because the flavor of the meat stands all by itself.
If you thought you were getting your bratwurst in cased meat form, in a hot dog bun, think again. These brats are butterflied, increasing the surface area and providing maximum contact with the grill. The insides get nice and crispy as they soak up all that smoky flavor.
Order a single or a double and then sink your teeth into the best brat sandwich you've ever had. Once you've had one, you'll kick yourself for not having discovered this secret earlier. The bun perfectly holds up to the meat, the sausage is perfectly cooked and the result is a perfect Wisconsin bite.
Charcoal Inn has two locations. Charcoal Inn North is at 1637 Geele Ave Sheboygan, WI 53081. Charcoal Inn South is at 1313 South 8th Street, Sheboygan, WI 53081.
