Accordions have a history that stretches back two centuries. The instrument is believed to have been invented in 1822 by Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann.
The instrument became popular in the 1800s and European immigrants around the world helped spread it to new region and it became a standard for folk musicians.
The World of Accordions Museum details this history. It's located in a beige brick building called the Harrington Arts Center. It’s a circa 1911 former Presbyterian church.
The museum was founded in 1993 with the goal of preserving historic instruments, music, recordings, documents, and artifacts. It has more than 1,300 instruments and displays, including instruments that are incredibly rare.
About 2,000 people make the pilgrimage to this unusual museum every year. Sometimes the facility hosts concerts featuring world-renowned accordion artists. The Hanni Strahl Concert Hall seats up to 1,000 people.
