There is a lot of freaky stuff going on in Wisconsin, but perhaps the scariest house in all of Wisconsin is Summerwind. Known previously as the Lamont Mansion, Summerwind is a mansion completely in ruins along West Bay Lake (Vilas County). But while this former home is tucked away on private land way up at the top of the state, rumors of its haunted nature have made their way throughout the state.
In the early 1900s, Summerwind served as a nice fishing lodge. The property was bought by Robert Patterson Lamont, hence the name "The Lamont Mansion." It was renovated over the period of two years. But Lamont did not last too long. According to reports, Lamont was so frightened by the spirits in the home that he shot a pistol at a ghost. Eventually, he just left.
After the Lamonts left the place, Arnold and Ginger Hinshaw moved into the property. They did not fare much better. Shapes and shadows making their way down the hallways was a familiar sight. They heard mumbled voices, and they saw a ghostly figure. Most disturbing, Arnold’s car would just burst into flames when he would try and go to work. Reportedly, Arnold ended up suffering a nervous breakdown while living in the property. And apparently Ginger attempted suicide. They only lasted six months.
The house was abandoned in the early 1980s, making it seem even creepier. The building fell into horrible disrepair, and the only residents were bats (creepy!). It was subsequently bought by a group of investors, but the building was struck by lightning and burned to the ground.
Here is a YouTube video that explains more of the history:
But do not worry–this is not the end of Summerwind. Harold and Babs Tracy and the Fox Valley Ghost Hunters plan to make this a B&B. Will you be their guest?
