Ehlers General Store opened in Cornucopia, Wisconsin in 1915 and has been serving the community groceries and supplies ever since. It was founded by a bookkeeper who lost his job with the local lumberyard and needed a new source of income. It turns out he went into the right business.
The shop has received some upgrades in the more than 100 years that they've been around. They now have wifi, serve pre-made food as well as groceries from local farms, and offer unique findings like Ahi tuna.
The pre-made food began with homemade pizza, which the shop serves on select days. The pizza features their out-of-this-world homemade pesto and was an instant hit.
Now they've incorporated tacos into their menu, and the town has gone wild. Put together by special guest Chef Cheryl O'Brien, formerly of a local restaurant, the tacos blend classic and contemporary Mexican flavors for an unforgettable gastro experience.
The number one priority of the store is to provide for the local community, both by selling a range of goods and necessary supplies and by representing local farmers by selling their produce.
Due to the harsh winters in Wisconsin, the store is open seasonally from May through December, and during that time it becomes a hub of community activity. Neighbors in the small town meet there, swap news, and enjoy each other's company while picking up their weekly necessities.
For a business to last more than 100 years, it must have a huge impact on the community. And visitors to Ehlers General Store see that impact every time they come by. It’s not just a store, but a neighborhood connector and a fosterer of community spirit.
