Sometimes, a small hike down a trail can lead to a big payoff. A little trail in the far north of Wisconsin is a gorgeous adventure, and it’s a reminder of why people travel hours just for a weekend in this magical area. The Houghton Falls Trail is an easy hike, but it leads to one of the best waterfall trails in Wisconsin. Here’s why you need to experience this special hike.
You’ll find this hiking trail near Washburn. It’s a small town in Bayfield County on the shore of Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay.
The park is small but stunning. Rugged sandstone cliffs extend into the cold blue waters of Lake Superior and the park includes 2,230 feet of shimmering shoreline.
The park’s 1.3-mile trail will take you to a waterfall that flows through the forest and over the sandstone cliffs. The water cascades more than 60 feet into a sandy cove.
The hike will also allow you to take in Houghton Point – it's a landmark that was a destination for Native Americans and early European explorers and fur traders. It’s as remarkable today as it was centuries ago!
The park is popular with walkers and runners but it’s easy to find solitude on the trail. Leashed dogs are allowed. Learn more about the natural area on the state Department of Natural Resources website. If you enjoy beautiful hikes in Wisconsin, here’s a trail in the area that will take you to some sea caves that are simply indescribable!
