The Public Market is located in Milwaukee’s historic Third Ward neighborhood. The market is modeled after Seattle’s Pike Place market and it aims to support local businesses. Space in the building is leased to a variety of food vendors. When the market opened, it primarily sold raw ingredients, but over time more businesses offered food that was ready to eat.
You can find all kinds of things in the market, including bakery goods, meats, produce, soup, cheese, spices, wine, coffee, candy, and more. If you love great seafood, you’ll want to visit the market.
The St. Paul Fish Company was founded in 2005 by Tim Collins – it’s on the east end of market and the motto of the business is “More fish, better fish, and cheaper fish.”
The business is part fish monger, part restaurant and there’s a lot to love at St. Paul Fish Company. Let’s start with the starters – choose from options like Oysters Rockefeller, Herring in Cream Sauce, Cajun BBQ Shrimp, and the aptly-named “Salmon Crack.” The fish fry is also incredible – there are several options but if you can’t decide, go for the Schlitz Battered Cod Fry.
The main dishes also do not disappoint. The restaurant offers grilled dinners like pan-fried walleye and catfish, as well as options like swordfish, red grouper, and sea bass.
The restaurant is a popular lunch spot with downtown workers and it also serves up some great sandwiches – enjoy Lake Perch (when available), a Catfish Po’Boy, a grilled tuna steak, a crab cake and more.
The Public Market is open daily and does not accept reservations – see the current hours and vendor information on its website. If you love delicious seafood, here are some dining spots on the Wisconsin coast.
