In the bustle of the Lake Geneva area, it’s still possible to connect with the quiet side of nature in a beautiful setting. Kishwauketoe is a hidden gem nestled in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. It’s a nature conservancy and outdoor recreation area that offers visitors a peaceful and picturesque escape with boardwalks and a tower that offers a view of Geneva Lake. Here’s why Kishwauketoe is one of Wisconsin’s best nature preserves.
Kishwauketoe, pronounced "kish-wah-kee-toe," is located in Williams Bay (population 2,900). There are multiple entrances to the preserve, but one of the most convenient is located near the beach in Williams Bay. There’s a parking area and signs directing you onto the trail.
Spanning over 231 acres, Kishwauketoe is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts, hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking solace in the beauty of the great outdoors.
The area features a stunning mix of wetlands, prairies, forests, and glacial kettles, which were formed thousands of years ago during the Ice Age. This unique blend of ecosystems creates a haven for a wide variety of plant and animal species.
The conservancy offers a network of well-maintained hiking trails that wind through its scenic terrain. The trails wind and form multiple loops – maps on the site can help you plan the route. Be sure to give them a look before you start your hike, as not every intersection is marked.
AllTrails Plus is a great way to have a trail map in hand as you hike. You can even download maps to your smartphone for offline use.
If you’re looking to connect with nature, you’re in the right place. Whether you're a seasoned hiker looking for a challenge or a casual walker seeking a leisurely stroll, Kishwauketoe has a trail suitable for all levels of fitness and interest.
As you explore the trails, you'll encounter scenic boardwalks and a tower that rises up from an open area of prairie. You can enjoy a sweeping view of the preserve and get a view of the lake in the distance.
I recently hiked in Kishwauketoe and climbed the tower – it’s a beautiful park. Learn more on the Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy website. Wisconsin has tons of amazing places to explore. Here’s where to find them.
