At a glance, the business might make little sense – a barn selling Caribbean-style rum in the middle of Wisconsin’s dairy country, on a road that’s almost deserted, unless you count the occasional Amish buggy. But as it turns out, if you build it, they will come and St. Mary’s Distillery proves that dairy country can serve up more than a good glass of milk. Business at St. Mary’s Distillery is booming these days and it’s worth a trip, if only to drink an Old Fashioned that tastes a little like success. Here’s what’s waiting for you at this fun Wisconsin distillery.
St. Mary’s distillery is located miles from the nearest town in Monroe County. It’s located on a 224-acre farm with a ridge view that extends for miles.
When you follow your GPS to the distillery, you might think you’t headed to the wrong place – drive carefully, there are a lot of Amish buggies on the roads around St. Mary’s.
Tom and Melissa Revels purchased the farm in 2010 and after some time, Melissa told her husband he needed to get a hobby. He found one, in the form of a distilling operation and tasting room.
St. Mary’s Distillery opened in 2018 and it has been a big success. It produces craft rum and brandy, and on Saturdays, its bar area is open to the public.
The business is located in a red barn – at a glance, it looks traditional on the outside. The inside is a different matter. You can get a glimpse of the distilling operation downstairs – it’s a small craft operation, but it produces some incredible sprits.
Upstairs in the tasting room, you can enjoy some great cocktails - you can enjoy rum drinks like a Pina Colada, Mojito, or an “Amish Mule.” If you like good brandy, order classics like an Old Fashioned or a Brandy Alexander.
