As the warm weather finally seems to be here and even sticking around for a bit, it’s time to start planning some time outdoors. Hiking through Wisconsin’s myriad state parks is awesome, but in mid-summer, it can be a sweaty, sticky experience. Luckily for us, there are places to stop and cool off along the way of some of them. Amnicon State Park is known for a gorgeous waterfall that has upper and lower parts along the Amnicon River. Along the way, there are pools of water that get warmed up in the summer sun and make this the perfect place to take a dip and cool off.
When you head to this area, it makes sense to visit the state's biggest waterfall at Pattison State Park, but the problem with Manitou Falls is you can't get very close. So while you might head there to say you've been, Amnicon Falls State Park is where you want to go to get an up close and personal experience.
The trails here are short and total just about two miles, so you can wander all over in a short amount of time. It's the perfect amount to work up a sweat and justify a little dip in the river.
Only strong swimmers should try this, because although the pools can be placid, rain runoff can cause the water here to move quickly. Folks love that they can go behind the waterfall for a truly magical experience, but everyone has to be careful and give respect to the power of the river.
There are natural pools that form after the power of the waterfall and these spots are where adventurous folks dip in their toes and take advantage of the gorgeous surroundings for a dip.
What could be better than slipping off your hiking boots to cool off and enjoy the gorgeous views from a totally different perspective?
Folks will focus on the pool after the upper falls, but Snake Pit falls along the same stretch of river is often less crowded. The way the waterfall spreads over the rock creates a refreshing spray and a cool place to play.
Water levels can change here quickly and the earth under the river is craggy and uneven. There's no cliff jumping here and swimming is at your own risk. Know that it can be slippery or even sharp on the river bottom and everyone should be super careful.
Whether you just wade in or go for a full-on swim, you'll love getting to really join up with nature and experience a new side of the park from the water. A few miles in the forest and a few minutes in the river are the perfect way to spend a Wisconsin day in the Northwoods.
