Between Madison and Milwaukee, a magical experience beckons kids every fall. Little Amerricka, a charming, throwback amusement park, has a pumpkin train that winds and meanders its way to a gorgeous field packed with bright orange pumpkins that are just waiting to be taken home. Read on to see why this train might be the best fall family experience of all in Wisconsin.
Little Amerricka is located in Marshall, a small town that’s about 30 minutes from Madison and an hour from Milwaukee. It’s worth the drive on a fall day.
The amusement park is decidedly old-school. You won’t find slick marketing campaigns or characters from the latest animated movie here – just lots of old rides, including a Scrambler, a Tilt-a-Whirl, bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, and an 18-hole mini-golf course.
The showpiece of the park is the train, Whiskey River Railway, a 1/3-size railroad that includes a big selection of steam and diesel engines, freight, and passenger cars.
The destination is even better than the journey on this ride. A huge field of big, beautiful pumpkins awaits, and the little ones on the train who have a ticket can each bring one home.
Dress warmly, as the train rides can be a little breezy on cool days. You may want to warm up with a stop at the concession stand – it sells hot chocolate and coffee.
The Little Amerricka Pumpkin Rides happen during the month of October. Check the website for the latest times and dates. On pumpkin ride days, the Meteor wooden rollercoaster and the miniature golf course will also be open, weather-permitting. Once you have your pumpkin, here’s where to see the best fall colors in Wisconsin.
