In southern Wisconsin, a little-known trail rewards adventurous hikers with some incredible views. The Pine Cliff Trail in Governor Dodge State park involves some climbing but it offers some incredible vistas of the forest, a pristine lake, and rocky cliffs. Lace up your hiking shoes – here’s what’s waiting for you on the Pine Cliff Trail.
The trail is located in Governor Dodge State park, a park in Iowa County that’s just outside the city of Dodgeville. It’s named after Henry Dodge, the first governor of the Wisconsin territory.
The park covers more than 5,000 acres and consists of oak and hickory forest. It has two scenic lakes (Cox Hollow Lake and Twin Valley Lake), sandstone cliffs, and a pretty waterfall called Stephen's Falls.
While the hike is a little challenging and some sections are steep, an avid hiker should have no problem tackling the path. The trail includes a lot of steps.
The trail is beautiful and serene – you’ll travel through heavy forests, past rock outcroppings and stream beds, and you’ll encounter some gorgeous lake vistas.
While the Pine Cliff Trail is well marked, sections of the trail are rocky and overgrown, so allow plenty of time to navigate this route. The trail can also become muddy in the spring or after heavy rains so choose good footwear. An entry fee is required to visit Governor Dodge State park. Learn more here.
