Milwaukee is recognizably the beer capital of the world. That being said, our history with taverns goes way, way back. There are numerous historic bars in Brew City, and while they all hold their own unique charm, this one tops the rest and earns the title of “Milwaukee’s oldest.” Let’s learn all about why we love Milwaukee’s oldest functioning tavern, and the historic charm it brings to Milwaukee’s south side.
Landmark 1850 Inn has earned the title of Milwaukee's oldest tavern.
On the southside of Milwaukee, right near the airport, you'll find Landmark 1850—not to be confused with the east side's Landmark Lanes . This pre-Prohibition tavern originated in the late 1840s and was originally called the New Cohen House. It has been kept up and run by owner Joe Hasler since the 1980s.
Having been built so long ago, the architecture is bursting with history.
When the current owner dug a hole to put up a fresh new sign, he found 25 horseshoes buried underneath the surface. When the building was first built, it acted as a stage coach between Milwaukee and Racine. After renovations to keep the building from closing, it is looking better than ever while still reflecting the atmosphere of the past. From the tin ceilings, to dark wood, and steam furnaces, this bar has stayed in the 1800s while still being a go-to spot for many today. The bar is family-run and they take pride in preserving the history of the bar, while still staying up to date.
Landmark has had quite a few visitors over the years.
Being located right next to General Mitchell International airport brings in a bunch of different customers. Many of Landmark's regulars are from around the country, making the tavern a temporary home among their travels. For awhile, many professional wrestlers stayed at a nearby hotel and frequented the bar. Bret "The Hit Man" Hart was a regular and Hulk Hogan has made an appearance.
Their beer selection has definitely kept up with the times.
Landmark was one of the first to serve Leinenkugel's and now has over 50 beers on tap, from local favorites to craft brews and imports. If you get through all 50 of them, you'll be a part of the "Suds Club" and get your very own stein to prove it!
Of course, their food is some of Milwaukee's favorite.
Besides filling your stomach with beer, Landmark offers an awesome traditional Milwaukee food menu with burgers, pizzas, and appetizers. Of course, this wouldn't be a true Milwaukee establishment without a Friday fish dinner, which is raved about throughout the city.
Rumor has it that the bar may be haunted due to its age.
Many like to talk about the hauntings around the old tavern, but the owner has never seen anything spooky.
Overall, this tavern is still beloved by Milwaukeeans everywhere.
Landmark 1850 is home to some of the best. From the service to the food, the company, and of course, the brews, this bar will make you feel right at home.
