With over 150 parks in our park system, it’s safe to say that Milwaukee is full of greenery. That said, some places just stand out above the rest, and this is one of the best. Strolling through this park alongside Lake Michigan will have you feeling like you’re walking through a fairy tale. Much like everything else in Milwaukee, it has fascinating history too!
Welcome to the incredibly breathtaking Lake Park.
This lakeside park has been bursting with beauty since 1889. Whether you're looking to take a nature walk, visit one of our historic lighthouses, or find the best views of Lake Michigan, this is the place to be.
This fairy tale dates way, way back.
Originating in 1889, this Milwaukee park holds quite the history. The land is located on what used to be a prehistoric Indian mound. Though the makers of the mound aren't fully known, this one mound is the last of its kind in Milwaukee.
Picnicking in a storybook scenery has never been more historic.
Back in ancient times, Native Americans passed through and settled in what we know as this beautiful park today. Much tribal land like this was sold to settlers for the timber. One exception was Gustav Lueddemann, who bought part of the park and opened it to the public to picnic and play in. This was declared as "Lueddemann’s on the Lake" and is home to the oldest trees in the park! Picnic, anyone?
Besides otherworldly strolls, you must check out Lake Park's historic lighthouse.
North Point Lighthouse has been guiding ships home since 1855, when the U.S. Lighthouse Service purchased two acres of Lake Park. The lighthouse consists of a 74-foot tower and a building called the Keeper's Quarters. There's no better way to see views of this beautiful park than from this amazing piece of history.
Though the history of the park dates back to prehistoric ages, the vision was made a reality in 1889.
Forward thinking leaders wanted to create Milwaukee parks to be astoundingly beautiful and provide a sanctuary for people who couldn't afford gardens of their own. The first park commission was created in 1889, when acreage for Lake Park was acquired. Famed architect Frederick Law Olmsted was brought on to design this park and many others in Milwaukee, and the results were breathtaking.
In 1993, Lake Park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Needless to say, honoring a visionary landscape designer and the Native American heritage has always been a priority of the volunteers who uphold the park today.
This park may feel like a fantasy, but it is very much Milwaukee.
Lake Park is beloved by so many Milwaukeeans, and each summer it's filled with locals who need an escape from the cityscape. With winding trails, history seeping through every acre, and views like this, Lake Park is a real life fairy tale.
You’ll find Lake Park located at 2975 N. Lake Park Rd., Milwaukee.
