Whether you were born in MKE or you’ve just visited, everyone knows that our little city is unforgettable. There’s truly nothing like being a Milwaukeean, and there are a few things we take with us when we part. Hopefully you never have to leave home, but if you do, these nine things are sure to bring you back to The Good Land.
It’s true that you can find awesome festivals and celebrations wherever you go, but MKE will always be the City of Festivals. Your Milwaukeean friend will always keep up with the celebration, but they may feel a little sadness knowing it just can’t compare to a Milwaukee festival.
Okay, this one might be a little obvious, we are Brew City, afterall. When you’re out and you see someone drinking a PBR, Miller, or especially Old Milwaukee, any Milwaukeean is sure to feel a little homesick! This heightens if you happen to drive by a brewery and smell the yeast that’s used in making famous brews. Nothing will bring a Milwaukeean home like the smell of beer.

Although some (maybe most) Milwaukeeans don’t miss the cold when they leave, there’s something oddly comforting about walking outside and losing all feeling in your face. It might hurt, but it hurts more to face the cold and anywhere but home.

Hopefully you never have to give up lake living, but if you’ve left the shores of Lake Michigan, any shoreline will have to do. Warning: the urge to jump in is very real for the Milwaukeean.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to find good cheese outside of Wisconsin. If you’re lucky enough to find a deep fried curd, or better yet, cheese that squeaks, it might just convince you that you’re back in MKE—at least for the moment.
If your lucky, your non-Milwaukeean friends cookouts will include bratwurst! If not, we’re sure to bring them to the party and pretend we’re back in the Midwest.
Wayne’s World is beloved by many...but it’s especially heart-warming for a Milwaukeean to hear Alice Cooper explain Milwaukee. Alice Cooper: "Yes, Pete, it is. Actually, it's pronounced ‘mill-e-wah-que’ which is Algonquin for ‘the good land.’"
Happy Days is a show that’s loved by many, but it means something different for a Milwaukeean. Mention The Fonz once, and they’ll probably pull up a picture of themselves and ‘The Bronze Fonz’—a statue of The Fonz in bronze form, living upon the Milwaukee Riverwalk.

Not everyone knows this, but bowling is still thriving to Milwaukee to this day. Many have retired their shoes and think it’s a sport of the past, but it’s still a favorite past-time of all Milwaukee natives. We're even home to the country's oldest bowling alley!
