12 Things Longtime Milwaukeeans Wish They Could Tell Newcomers
If you’ve lived in Milwaukee for a while, you already know how cool and unique it is here. That said, there are a few things you probably wish someone would’ve told you a long ago. Here are twelve things Milwaukee natives wish they could tell newcomers so they don’t have to learn the hard way!

Even when planning a move to the city, newcomers often equate Wisconsin with farming. It’s true, our state has some incredible farms, but Milwaukee is a big city and most of us aren’t related to the farming culture at all.

Our produce is the best of the best! You won't find food much fresher than this. You know that whole farm-to-table trend that is growing in popularity across the country? We've always done it that way. Milwaukee is way ahead of the curve on this one, so you can thank us as trendsetters.

When coming to Brew City, it can be easy to get ahead of yourself. There’s so much amazing beer here, and Milwaukeeans can be found drinking every night of the week, but be careful! It takes some time to settle into the culture, and it's not a race. The beer will be there tomorrow.

Even though you should be careful, we welcome you to join in on the party! We know you might not be used to this level of beer culture—there’s nowhere else that parties like we do—but don’t worry, you’ll be a pro in no time!

Our street names, towns, and sometimes even businesses have weird names that are often drawn from Native languages. It’s okay if you don’t know how to say them all, we'll happily teach you.

We might not admit that are vernacular is weird, but deep down we all know it's a little quirky. You betcha’.

There’s truly nothing better than living next to a Great Lake. The weather is milder, and the whole city is more beautiful because of it.

You might have heard of Summerfest, but Milwaukee is known as the "City of Festivals" because we have a festival for literally everything. If you thought you knew how to celebrate before, be prepared for never-ending festivities that celebrate many other cultures, cuisines, and events.

This is vital. It won’t stop, and you’re going to need to learn how to bundle up, dig your car out, and get to work on time. We do it every day all winter long. It's not impossible, but it takes some getting used to if you've never lived in a snowy state!

You’ve probably been warned about the snow, but our weather is terribly unpredictable. In the summer, it’s hot and sticky... but it could also drop to freezing temperatures at any minute. Be brave! The weather here will inevitably make you a tougher person. Pro tip: always keep a jacket with you, no matter what the forecast says.

Because of our insane weather, we embrace summer like it may never return. Milwaukeeans come alive in the summer, and soon you will too. There's never a shortage of things to do and places to explore, so we grab onto any (and every) opportunity to get out and enjoy life.

Milwaukee will welcome you with arms wide open! Milwaukeeans are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and you’re sure to have new friends that feel like family in no time.
