From our German roots to our rich history in brewing, it’s easy to see that Milwaukee is a unique place. That said, anyone who has lived here for a significant amount of time has inevitably picked up some strange habits, and if you grew up here, you’ll defend them to the grave. Milwaukeeans are an odd bunch of people, no matter how much we love them. These ten habits are strangely unique to Milwaukeeans, and we’ll defend them like our life depends on it.
If you overhear a Milwaukeean's conversation, you’ll often hear us express that we’re going "by" the store. No, we’re not driving by, we’re going inside. It just sounds right to us.
Brewers games are always a good time, but Milwaukeeans are in it for the racing sausages! You’ll find us making bets with our neighbors on whether the hot dog or Italian sausage will go all the way. This is a totally normal conversation for a baseball game, and after tailgating all day, it makes perfect sense that we'd be so into the strangest part of the game.
Milwaukee is full of strange traditions, but this one tops the list. Cannibal sandwiches, similar to steak tartare, are served as an appetizer. They consist of raw ground beef and onions on a cracker. It's sometimes modified into a sandwich using rye bread. Though this unusual sandwich is a tradition for some Milwaukeeans, the Centers for Disease Control put out a statement in 2013 warning against these sandwiches (or any raw meat), but it's still fun to reminisce on our wacky old traditions.
It doesn’t matter the occasion... if it’s Packer game day, you better believe we’ll be decked out in all of our favorite gear. You can easily find a church full of Packer fans on Sundays.
A Bloody Mary anywhere else isn't even comparable to a Milwaukee Bloody Mary. Milwaukeeans have a tendency to turn this spicy drink into an entire meal, including cheeseburgers and fried chicken as part of the elaborate toppings. Why order a boring old Bloody when this delicious monstrosity is on the menu?
Many people go out on Fridays to dance the night away, and we do too... but we do it at a local fish fry. No Friday is complete without a fish dinner and polka dancing with fellow Milwaukeeans—it's the highlight of our week, every week, no exceptions.

9. Busting out summer clothes at the first sign of warmth.
It's not unusual to find a Milwaukeean in shorts and a tank top when it hits 40 degrees outside. Odds are, we'll be skiing or shoveling snow in a t-shirt if the sun is out.
Most people tend to stay home when the weather is bad, but Milwaukeeans laugh in the face of blizzards. We have the habit of ignoring all weather warnings, and still getting to work on time, even in the snowiest of driving conditions.
Yep, Milwaukee is a weird place, but there’s nowhere else we’d rather call home. What strange habit would you defend ’til the end? Let us know in the comments!
